On The Way to the Restaurant

by Taylor   Dec 31, 2006

So the beauty of the world
lies in the sheer splendor
of a long-lost sunset at midday?
I ask myself in contemplation,
up to my ears in belated rumination,
what the true meaning of life is.
My music blaring soothing melodies
of the soulful voices of the past,
that I am sure asked the same questions,
as I do now,
as I gaze solemnly out the car window,
past the smudged glass,
and upon the highway that takes people
to so many various destinations,
one to a birthday party,
one to a funeral, I imagine..
The homeless man on the street corner-
he's smiling.
Whats he got to smile about?
Whats he got to sing about while I frown?
Happiness is what happiness is, I suppose.
You can't describe it, can't define it
like the ingredients on the menu.
Tomatoes, chicken, pasta
Joy, peace, passion...
Today was someone else's tomorrow,
his yesterday too.
I finally understood that
while on my way to the restaurant.
