Until Tomorrow (Holocaust)

by melly xx   Jan 11, 2007

They said you're a jew
When I asked why?
"That's the reason" he spat in my face,
"why you're going to die."
They separated us
Lined us up
Moved us forward
Threw us dirty cups
Made us undress
Drop off our clothes
Gave us used dresses and holey shoes,
That barley covered our toes
They shaved our heads
And some of us started to cry
When we saw all the precious hair
In a pile stacked so high
We got into another line
Being told we were dirty swines
"What is this line for?"
"What's it this time?"
I heard the word "next"
It was my turn
She asked me my name
I replied, "Rochelle Shenkern"
She told me this is your new name.
"It's no longer Rochelle.
Remember this number,
You can go, and stay well."
I looked at my arm
And saw a line of ink
I realized they were numbers
And my heart began to sink
I moved into the next room
Filled with a horrible stench
There were rows of bunks of hay
In them women and children drenched
You could feel their misery and pain.
I tried to get a bunk, wondering
How these people could stay sane
I found a bunk with two girls in it
They asked me where I'm from
I said it doesn't matter now does it
But I come from Wierzkum
One girl was from Russia,
The other was from Ukraine
One was named Zosia
The other loreighane.
They showed me their numbers
They were shorter than mine
They told me all about this camp
That everything here is about lines
A guard screamed, "lights out!"
And we all hassled to get into our beds
"Hopefully I make it till tomorrow"
Those were the last words Zosia said.

It is great for poems like these to be written so truly. People won't have first hand accounts of the Holocaust much longer and any awareness is better then none. I liked the poem very much.

When someone down votes poems I wish they would say why. I think this full of heart.I think that it is a wonderful write that you have created here. I am so glad to see this horrible crime is being remembered by our young people. I think your imagination was excellent. Great work!
