I didn't smell the dragon lurking outside my window.
I didn't taste his fired breath.
I didn't see his rage unfolding.
I didn't imagine him so full of pride.
I didn't feel his hardened heart.
I didn't hear his nostrils flare.

I couldn't smell the velvet roses.
I couldn't taste the sun's gold rays.
I couldn't see my heart breaking.
I couldn't imagine I deserved much more.
I couldn't feel my spirit dying.
I couldn't hear the knock on the door.

I wouldn't smell the temperature rising.
I wouldn't taste the stagnant air.
I wouldn't see his angry voice.
I wouldn't imagine he hurt me by choice.
I wouldn't feel his blackened soul.
I wouldn't hear his eyes cut air.

I shouldn't have smelled his toxic smoke.
I shouldn't have tasted his brittle love.
I shouldn't have seen his sharp tongue.
I shouldn't have imagined his blade wouldn't cut.
I shouldn't have felt the weight of his pain.
I shouldn't have heard the fault was mine.

I didn't smell the dragon lurking outside my window.
I didn't taste his fired breath.

AND THIS TIME ...

I didn't see his love inside.
I didn't imagine him another way.
I didn't feel his panic as he lost control.
I didn't hear his empty words.

So ...

I will never again smell his hurtful hands.
I will never again taste his degrading voice.
I will never again see his rage unfolding.
I will never again imagine him so empty of pride.
I will never again feel his hardened heart.
I will never again hear his nostrils flare.

I slain the dragon who lurked beneath my window.
I never touched; I only imagined.
