A little present

by The Girl From Yesterday   Jan 24, 2007

The moon cast shadows o'er the land,
The hour of eleven was at hand,
A young girl sat on a lone park bench,
Heartbreaking sobs causing her body to wrench.

A few days ago she made a mistake,
One that would soon her life to take,
No one knew the cause of her sorrow,
She knew she might not see tomorrow.

Her hand hastily swiped at her eye,
But even still she continued to cry,
The man had seemed so gentle so...clean,
But now she knew that the world was mean.

She was only a girl, and a young one at that,
But she fell for the man as he tipped his hat,
He said that he loved her and she believed it true,
If you had heard him, you would have too.

Two days ago she received in the mail,
A simple poem which she now held,
"The heart, the diamond, the club, the spade,
Welcome to the world of AIDS"

"The heart, the diamond, the club, the spade" relates to an ordinary stack of playing cards, but unlike life, it is a game. But it also holds a deeper meaning. The heart stands for what is pushed aside when you have lust for someone, the diamond stands for greed. The club is a bit harder to describe, but it stands for power. Humans have dominated all species on this earth, and have even wrongly dominated other human beings. The spade stands for the expression " Digging your own grave" because with lust, greed, and power, there is no room for love, and without love, there is no life.
