My Marine

by Jessica   Jan 30, 2007

Sitting by him in the airport,
I feel the tears race to my eyes,
These last few days have gone so fast,
I just can’t say good-bye.

My Marine is heading off,
He’s leaving me again,
To fight for this country’s freedom,
And hopefully to win.

Iraq has seen him more than me,
I know the airport well,
I wish he didn’t have to leave,
The departure is pure hell.

But I respect him for what he’s doing,
And he kisses me good-bye,
I can see what’s coming next,
As he tells me not to cry.

“If I never see you again,”
Are the words he always starts,
“Know that I’ll always love you
From the bottom of my heart.”

That’s when the tears begin to fall,
And I know Christmas went by too fast,
He gives me one more kiss
Because we know it could be our last.

I love him for all he’s doing,
And he knows I’ll write him tonight,
Pour my heart into the letter,
So he can read it by candlelight.

I know that I am lucky,
For my husband is a Marine,
He fights this country’s battles
In the air, on land or sea.

But no one will ever understand
How much it breaks my heart,
To know I might not see him again
And that it’s tearing me apart.

So when you see a Marine
With a smile on his face,
Don’t ask him what war is like,
Just give him a little space.

Tell him that you’re thankful
For everything he’s done,
And that without him you’d be lost
Because of the battles he has won.

I love this! I know what you are going though my husband just left on the 26th & it was really hard for me. But hey ... they are OUR marines, we just have to stay strong for them & our family's no matter how hard it is for us to tell them good-bye.
