With this Crutch

by ReBecca   Feb 3, 2007

"With this Crutch"

I understand
more than you think I do
I am me
Just not you

I am an individual
words may not be my forte
It doesn't mean
I have nothing worthy to say

I have feelings
you might not understand
My hopes are strong
My dreams are grand

Listen closely
try to read between the lines
Watch...
and see the signs.

Give me honor
Treat me with respect
I am disabled
Not derelict

My movements are different
Perhaps I have a crutch
I speak with an impediment
or not much

I am as you
Just not the same
Recognize me
I have a name

Don't talk around me
Like I don't exist
I am not broken
and have no need to be fixed.

ReBecca Sanchez

In honor of all the disabled in our world.

This is great. Working in the health care field, you have no idea how many times I have seen people talk about the disabled as if they aren't even there. It saddens my heart. This piece is right on! Great job!

Thank you. You give me more credit than I deserve. I have stopped writing, I have went through an experience that is so devasting that I cant yet write abot it, eventually I will, I hope. In the mean time, reading others poetry gives me something.

Okay, I loved this - and it is a GREAT reminder to people that just because someone is disabled does not mean that they don't have minds to think with or emotions to feel with. You've touched me again with this one, please, please, don't stop writing.

    This poem says so much.

    I am as you
    Just not the same
    Recognize me
    I have a name

    Rebecca.....you have touched
the feelings of so many disabled
people...I know it really hit home
    with me. Excellent Job!
