I stand for something
Beyond myself
So does this pencil
So does this shelf
I stand for more
Than a single human being
Im more than a student
If youre more than just seeing
That pencil in hand
Is more than just wood
And filled with other things,
It is misunderstood.
Its a teacher to hands
And a writer to minds
Inspiration it sees
For those who feel blind
That shelf over there
Has a greater beyond
Than holding those books
Or pictures so fond
That shelf is a resting place
For history, for memories
It holds dreams up high
For those who endure agonies
And I stand for something
Beyond myself too
I am pain and happiness
Or a shoulder for the blue
I can be an ambition
A voice for the weak
Im a star watching over
Or a musical technique
Yes, I stand for something
Beyond myself
As does a child
As does oneself
But beyond it lies within one
And varies far and wide
Though the only way to find
Is to take a look inside
