Trying to Catch Lightning

by John Long   Feb 4, 2007

Trying to catch lightning in the palms of his hands
But he can't see the sky with his head in the sand
As it falls through the hour glass and onto the floor
Where the other dancers are trying to score
Some kind of comfort to get through this night
Of promises broken like Christmas tree lights

Disapproving looks from the queens of the herd
Who look like they've stood in something absurd
As the world starts rolling across the beach
The sandman cartwheels as he starts to preach
It looks like the Greeks will inherit the earth
Or failing that they'll just spit in your purse

Down in the dumps next to the weeds
Sniffing the roses to see where she peed
In the night of exotic Arabian dreams
Of Vanilla ice thighs smooth as ice cream
At the sign that reads jewelry and pawn
The scapegoat but look out for the horns

These are my favorite lines, although I loved them all. These two lines were perfect for the end. Reminds of me the jaded person, or the poor school kid who gets revenge. Knowing we should all look out for the scapegoat, the horns could kill us in the end.
This was a great write, I could identify and paint a picture of the analogies. Wonderful Job.
