Lovers and Fools

She came in for a reason to this place, of whispered secrets told
And brought with her a heart hardened from winter's freezing cold

She thought she saw redemption, in those eyes that seemed so true
She thought the world needs saving, she and not a few

So she went running in circles, and she laid her soul bare
She above all, thought to give love, to him who seemed to need care

And she worshiped the ground he walked on
And she layed herself prostrate
And she thought she saw in his face
A love to seal her fate

On the dancing and the circus went, like a sneering parody
Of a fairytale coming true and she really thought he set her free

She never did notice all this time, a hand that propped her up
When in her chasing of a dream, she faltered in life's ruts

She never saw a shadow that tried to come to light
Her eyes are fixed to the sun that shined on her so bright

And so the shadow quietly fades, and goes back to the dark
To his own soul now more bereft, and left without a spark.

Who loses in this game of life we all so eagerly play?
Sometimes love exacts too much of a price...
But we can only pay.
