lasting love
How many times can you go up to the one you truly love, and say directly to his face, "I love you." You can't. Every time, something pulls you back, telling you to wait a little longer. But how much longer can you wait? He has told his friends that he's worried...worried that you don't care for him, worried that you don't need him. But what can you say? When his friends come to you with words like, "He thinks you're distant," or "I told him to chill, but really now..." what do you do? For some, it's impossible to just go up to him and tell him how you feel. Especially if you live so far away that the last words you say to him every night are, "Love you, miss you." If you really love him, though; and he inhabits all your thoughts, and everywhere you go, you see him; then there's only one way to do it: When everyone is together, and everyone else is sitting around, doing nothing but sitting and chatting, just lean a little closer to him, and will him to weave his hands a little tighter around you. When you are truly close, you whisper up to him, "Do you honestly know how much I love you?" When he gives you a relatively confused look, you continue. "More than the stars that twinkle across the ink-black sky, more than the small blades of grass that peek out from under the snow right after winter. In every breath I take, I inhale you. You're like a drug that I could just as easily give up as get high on, but choose not to. Hon, you don't honestly know how much you mean to me. You don't honestly know how much I love you." After a speech like that, I can guarantee that his response will be something to the equivalent of, "If every breath you take is like inhaling me, then every time I blink, I bring the picture of you back into my eyes. Blinking, like breathing, is impossible to control. My love for you is just as impossible and untamed, but it never shrinks, it only grows." You smile up at him, and he kisses the top of your head. "I love you," you whisper to him. "I love you...too," he whispers back. You get a sudden cockiness about you and say, "I love you more." He accepts your challenge and says, "No, I love you more." You go back and forth for a while, until you get tired of it and say, "Okay, fine. You love me more than I love you. I didn't think that was humanly possible. But I guess so." He grins, and hugs you tight. All of a sudden, it happened. You said it, and the clouds rolled in. or more specifically, the car rolled in to the driveway. He packs up his bags, and heads for the door. As you reach for him and offer him your hand, he takes it, pulling you close to him, inhaling the fragrance of your hair, memorizing the way your body feels in his arms. As you kiss, you think about how easy it was to say those three words, those three syllables, those eight letters, and passion bursts from within you. Only then does the stark realization of it hit you. You said those words, and the time you spent together quickened, the time for him to leave you drew ever nearer. But does that stop you from saying it again? Of course not! It is a feeling so absolutely incredible that it actually paves the way for you to say it more, and more, and more. Imagine...the last words you say to him are, "Love you, miss you," and the last words he says back are, "Honey, I love you too." |
