The Nightingale

by EoB   Feb 10, 2007

I still recall the summer nights,
the quiet sigh of swaying trees,
that made, beneath the silver moon,
the dance of shadows in the breeze.

And here, where beauty seized me so,
and washed my strength away in tears,
I met my hope, the nightingale,
of whom I`d dreamt for many years.

'Tis strange how love comes swift to me,
and 'neath a moon that still hung high,
I laid my heart to rest in her
ere light of morning pearled the sky.

So deep the hearts of nightingales.
For me, she would endure the light
while knowing it would taint her dreams
to see the world not draped in night.

But men have hearts of lesser strength
and will not sacrifice as much,
as nightingales would do for love,
and dare not loose themselves in such.

And as the darkness lessened some
I gazed upon my nightingale,
and knew her love would outlive mine,
for love, in me, is all to frail.

Lest wind, in twilight's sweet embrace
would sweep the dust off of her past,
and tell through restless whispers, tales
to make the love for me her last.

I chose to leave this nightingale
as drop by drop, upon her eyes
there fell the memory of love,
in sleep, beneath the starry skies.

For one who swore unto himself
to never wander nights again,
'tis hard to see the sun descend
not seeking comfort in his pen.
