Happy Single Awareness Day

by Once an Angel   Feb 15, 2007

What a happy Valentines Day it is this year,
certainly you, my friend, must think so too!
Still at home on this dreary day all alone,
has always been the most desirous thing to do.

Because it so that lovely time of the year again,
when Hallmark monopolizes its cutesy cards and bears.
When chocolate goes from store shelves to lovers' hands,
and romantic music drifts sickly through the air.

Plastic heart shaped, over-sized metallic balloons,
glitter and gleam in whatever door one steps through.
Oh, but the pointless money spending does not stop there,
for every grade school child gives out Valentines too.

Jewelry is exchanged in colored boxes with bows,
and the bills sore higher as the savings fall ever lower.
Romantic dinners with one plate of pasta for two,
as couples cling together, dancing in the moonlight's glow.

Teen queens are basking in their temporary glory,
arms and lockers overflowing with countless love tokens.
And then there are the girls that wish they could disappear,
because the only thing they hold is a heart shattered and broken.

Some might say these girls are simple and most definitely jealous,
because it was "just wrong" to be so dejected and depressed that way.
So don't let me be the one to pour down the rain on your parade,
I'll just go on and wish you a "Happy Single Awareness Day."

    This was beautiful.
I think I have fallen in love with this poem.
The first stanza had me hooked and it just kept getting better and better.
I loved the last stanza most, I thought it held a lot of power.
You did a beautiful job with this.

Heh, I've never seen a poem taken from that point of view on Valentine's Day and needless to say it is refreshing to see. Its title jumped out and me and i'm glad i read this one. You are a talented poet who knows how to bend words and lines to your will to make the most of it. Great write.
