Pickett's charge

by Independence Forever   Feb 20, 2007

The confederate fores massed at Gettysburg's fields
two days the rebus were pushed back, the forests their shields

on the third day, lee gave the order, all ahead
a quarter of a mile in open terrain, all will be dead

the order obeyed, the men marched on
bullets tearing holes, many were soon gone

they breached the union wall for thirty minutes long
but then they were pushed back, singing a sad song

the field filled with dead and dying
in the hot July sun, bodies were frying

Pickett lamented his men's deaths, forever would he cry
after all that death, he wish he could be with them and die

after that fatefully charge, the rebus lost battle after battle
after Pickett's charge many resigned to the life of herding cattle

the high water mark tells no lies
but they rest is written in the skies
