Bullet

by cliff lee   Feb 24, 2007

I lie here thinking of nothing but death and no one to keep me company but despair.
People say I have everything to live for and yet I can only think of one.
I look down and see the glare of lights reflecting off of my revolver.
I check to make sure there is a bullet in every chamber wondering which one I will get.
Suddenly your face comes to mind and I remember you’re my one reason to live.
So in that respect I remove a single bullet from it's chamber and set it upright on the table.
I slowly place the cold steel barrel upon my temple feeling the distinct hole against my flesh.
The moment my thumb touches the hammer my heart starts racing and nearly doubles when I hear it cock into position.
For the last time I drift off into a daze as I think about the meaning of life.
Once I'm sure my life is meant to end I hesitantly place my finger on the cold steel trigger.
It seems to take hours for the hammer to hit once I pull the trigger.
One other thing people say is when you're about to die your life flashes in front of your eyes.... They’re wrong.
The only thing I see once I pull the trigger is your face in the endless field of black.
As the seconds pass your face starts to fade to black and the burning sensation from the bullet traveling through my flesh, as if it were paper, set in.
All of a sudden it was like I couldn't close my eyes to shield them from the intense light coming from the endless pit of fire.
Once my eyes got used to the fiery light I looked up and realized exactly where I was. I was at the firry gates of Hell.
I dropped to my knees begging God for forgiveness for what I had done and another chance at life but got no response from God only screams of pain coming from the others who had joined me in this place.
It's then that I realize I had done the worst thing man can do and I can never be forgiven.
Once it seemed to be over nothing seemed to come but darkness...
