Today is my birthday,
but also a day of grieving.
I share this special day,
with the rest of the world.
Each year I turn a year older,
and each year someone grieves,
a year of their loved one gone.
My tears are for joy,
Their tears are for the pain and grief.
Today my life I am celebrating,
my fellows Americans grieve for the lost.
For me, today is a walk down memory lane,
I remember my past years.
I blow out my candles and the day is done.
For others, today is the day of sorrow,
a walk down memory lane,
to remember the times they had with
the ones they loved.
The day ends but their grief doesn’t,
for me, today is a one-day celebration,
for the world, it’s a lifelong pain.
