Sleep

by Cory   Feb 28, 2007

I search for you in the dark
under the illusion of a dream
in which you are here
you are mine, sleeping next to me.

In this dream I see you
lying on your back
your arms at ease above your head.
You breathe slow and deep,
your chest rises and falls
steady, in a way that I could never match.
I choose this moment to pull you closer to me.

Once you are resettled
I kiss your cheeks.
Sometimes you don't notice when I do this.
I like it best that way.
Somehow it helps me remember
what you feel like
when I am alone here
trying to pass the night with only
a pillow to cling to.

I move again, now leaning on my elbow
looking down at you.
At this point
I can't help but kiss your lips
hoping that everything
I'm not saying in this moment
might be passed from
my mouth to yours
as I perform this simple
act of affection.

When I kiss you a second time
you slowly wake
and respond by
sleepily kissing me back.
I smile when you open your eyes,
tell you that "I love you, beautiful."

It is here that my dream ends.
I wake up, reaching, searching for you
in the dark
hoping maybe, just maybe
you might be here after all.
