A Sinful Slaughter

by .K.i.T.t.Y.   Mar 7, 2007

The mockingbirds whistle
A sorrowful tune,
Telling the story
Of slaughtered songbirds.

Winds join in harmony,
Trees sway the melody,
And clouds darken,
Lashing lightning lilt.

So listen carefully,
They will only warble once
Of a death,
That led to no right.

An innocent bird,
So wrongly accused
Of taking away,
A young maiden's youth.

Lies that cover,
Another's abuse,
Fall into the lap,
Of a crippled victim.

To jail he is caged,
To trial he is summoned,
To the town he is trash,
And to death he is shot.

Because of white men's rule,
He had no voice,
Save himself,
Just one aid...

Whose best,
Just wasn't
Good enough...

It is based off of Harper Lee's book. It isn't too great, but I'd like to know what you think of it. Please and Thank you.

    Of slaughtered songbirds.
[[I don't like the description of "slaughtered" here...it's too harsh for what the beginning tries to portray, if that makes sense.]]

    An innocent bird,
    So wrongly accused
    Of taking away,
    A young maiden's youth.
[[I don't know why, but I really liked this line.]]

Hm. This is pretty interesting. I liked the topic, save for the last line in the first stanza. The rest is well put, well described and I loved how you portrayed the book here. Nicely done.

This is the first poem of yours I have read, and I really like it! Its been quite a while since I'd read that book, but I love the poem! There is a stanza or two in the middle that doesn't quite flow with the rest (as if I have a right to comment about that!! :) ), but overall its a very powerful poem that reads really well. Great job!
