Her Soldier

by UnwrittenTragedy   Mar 13, 2007

Sitting at the end of her bed
Her heart encircled with fear
She holds his picture closely
It's a loss she just can't bear.
The thought of living without him
It breaks her heart inside
She loves him with all of her being
It's a fact she just can't hide.
She can see the results of war
The death, the heartache, the pain
She can hear the sounds of battle
Gunfire, explosions, and flames
Dreading to hear the call
She sits staring at the phone
The call informing families
Their beloved soldier was gone.
The days are passing slowly
And anxiously she waits
She hears the sound of the phone ring
A sound shes come to hate.
Picking it up slowly
She lifts it to her ear
The connection is getting fuzzy
She's straining hard to hear.
"I'm coming home my darling
I've fought in my last war
I called to let you know I'm safe
Please don't worry anymore"
The connection started to falter
And the last thing that she heard
Was him saying the he loved her
She strained to hear each word
"I love you too" she whispered
And then set down the phone
Tears of joy filled her eyes
Her soldier was coming home.
