Remember Me?

by Amber Davis   Mar 31, 2007

Remember me? I'm your child. The one who rebelled against everything you said to prove that I'm capable of making my own decisions. Trust that the lessons you struggled to teach me did not glide past, but have sunk in and do affect my every choice.

Remember me? I am your baby sister. The one you used to beat up as a child and now you trust that I'll always have your back in a fight, but no matter how old I am, I'll always be your baby sister so you'll always try to protect me.

Remember me? I am your best friend. The one you tell your secrets to because you know they'll remain secrets. I've stuck by you through thick and thin. Through all the laughter and every tear. I've glued back together the pieces of your heart and together we've made countless inside jokes.

Remember me? I'm your classmate. The one you couldn't understand why I kept to myself. Why I'd rather read a book then go to a party on a Friday night. Or why I refused to spend $50 on one pair of jeans. In my eyes that's 2 weeks worth of food that I wouldn't get at home or money toward college.

Remember me? I am your student. The one you talked about with fellow teachers. Stating that I ditched school because I was doing drugs or being promiscuous and the one who would never hold a diploma, but guess what you were wrong. The sweater I never took off hid bruises or dirty, not a stomach inflated by pregnancy or needle tracks. Perhaps if you would have closed your mouth and opened your eyes you could have helped me.

Remember me? I'm the sister you adopted as a daughter because our own mother decided she didn't want the responsibility. You held my hand and guided me and picked me up when I fell.

Remember me? I'm your step-sister and unofficial guardian. The one you despise because I punish you for doing the same things I did not too long ago. I do it because I love you and want to give you a better life. It's hard to be so young and hold the responsibility of raising two boys not much younger than I, but I don't regret it. I'm thankful that I can help you so that now you have opportunities in life.

Remember me? I am your girlfriend. The one who misses you and thinks about you everyday. The one who will do anything just to see you smile and cherishes you for the gift you are. I read about you in fairy-tales as a little girl and now together we're writing our own story. You're the one I want to spend the rest of my life with because with you there is always laughter in my eyes and a smile touching my lips.

Remember me. For I will always remember you whether you have crossed me and broken my heart or laughed with me until tears streamed down our faces and our stomachs ached.

Remember me. I am the one that has fought to be my own person and is never afraid to voice my opinion. The who doesn't care what people think about me or how I look. I care more about sentiments than value. I believe everyone has their own gift and can make a difference. I believe that people should be cherished like rare gems. I believe we make our own destiny and that a smile is the root of every tear. Most of the time we cry because we miss something that once made us smile.

Thank you to those who've helped me. Your kindness has not gone unnoticed. Forgive me if I've made mistakes, after all I'm only human. Don't judge me because I don't fall into a category, embrace my individuality and my courage to be different. Love me for who I am because I'm not going to change and I'm sorry if I laugh at times that you find inappropriate, but understand that I've spent a good portion of my life crying, and if you love me remember me and keep my close in your heart, because are burned within the depths of my soul by those whom I cherish.
