Lesson Learned Naturally

Every other day, is an ongoing battle to get out of bed to go to school. In all reality, you learn to read and write in elementary school. You are taught the alphabet, handwriting, words and grammar... I have a guilty pleasure that I did not learn in school, a natural gift if you will. I write poetry.

Even as a small child, I had admired my mother for her ability to write and rhyme. Her thoughts went from her mind straight to her pen, who told the story to her piece of paper. That's when I started writing. I tried so hard, and even read some of my poems to my class. I was a little girl who wanted to be just like her mommy.

Some time passed and I continued to rhyme. That with bat, me with be, true with you. I was on a rampage. I wrote poems about things I knew... how my day was, what my brother was like, doing the dishes, etc. I had so much fun, words could never express the feeling I felt.

As I got older, my stanzas started to flow together. My words were small, but had meaning. I started writing about my feelings, whether they were good or bad. By age eleven, I was writing about love, pain and friendship. My teachers were in awe and told me to never stop writing. I felt special that I was able to achieve my goal... to be a great writer like women in my family before me.

Now that I'm seventeen, my writing has improved most definitely. You can't learn a gift in school. I can honestly say that not a single day in the past eight years has gone by that I didn't write. It's something I love, cherish and admire. It's something that comes so naturally it could make any person cry. You can be taught how to read and how to use a pen on a piece of paper, but you cant be taught how to have a passion for something.
