One Cold Winter's Night (Part 1 - His Story)

by LostLikeTearsInRain   Apr 7, 2007

Standing at the creek bed
Memories flood his mind
He keeps his head down
With tears his face is lined

This place is somewhat holy to him
It's where he told her he loved her
He wonders "Where are you my darling?"
The phrase sounds petty and unsure

He walks up and down the stream
Trying to replay everything they ever said that day
He doesn't seem to realize he's thinking out loud
But he continues to reenact the scene anyway

He holds out his hand as if he's holding hers
But all that grasps it is the wind
He falls to his knees
His life appears to be at it's end

Burying his face in the snow
It doesn't feel cold at all
His legs are too week to get up
So he is reduced to a crawl

Then he lays down
Staring up at the night sky
He finds the star he dedicated to her
He prays to the heavens that his heart might die

Then the pain would subside
Then he could go on living
Sure he'd never love again
But that is worth giving

As he closes his puffy eyes
He swears he hears her whisper something
"What is it my love?" he asks the air
It's so quiet his ears ring

He figures she just didn't hear him
"What is it my love?" he yells this time
The only reply is his own echo
He's ashamed as if he committed some sort of crime

Getting his strength back
He stands up and turns to walk away
When he catches a glimpse of something
Written on a tree long ago one day

He doesn't bother to look
Waving his white flag of surrender
He know the tree reads
"Kevin and Katie forever and ever"

He fumbles with his keys
Finally reaching the ignition
He vows to quit the fight
He tells himself to end this meaningless mission

As he backs up onto the road
He doesn't see the headlights approaching his car
His eyes are still swollen from crying
He knows this might leave more than a scar

He embraces death
Not caring at all
He smiles as the two vehicles hit
He's reached the end of his fall

He hears the ambulance and sees the paramedics
He hands one of them something and whispers in their ear
As the heart monitor draws a straight line and beeps
This is an end to all of his fear
