Soldier in green

by Heather   Apr 9, 2007

Little boy dressed in green
held a picture up to me
He said "this is my daddy
and I wanna be just like him"
I stared at the familiar face
it was one I knew to well
A soldier dressed in green
with dog-tags around his neck
I smiled and said
"your not quite big enough yet"
he marched around the room and saluted me
I had to force a smile and kneel before he
I said "Your still a little boy wit lots of growing to do
don't grow up just yet it to soon"

That little boy grew up
and he did just as he said
he became a soldier a leader of his platoon
I received a postcard just the other day
it said "momma I miss you but I'm doing ok"
tears clouded my vision as I read the rest
"it's awfully loud over here and my best friend got shot
Momma I miss you But I'll be home soon"

the young soldier didn't make it home
the day before leave he was shot
but every now and then i hear that little boy
marching around in the living room saying
"I wanna be just like my daddy
a soldier in green"

This was such a sad yet touching poem. War doesnt result in anything but death, pain and tears. We resolve nothing from sending troops into war. Great write
