Close my eyes

Sweat drips off my forehead
as i take another step down.
My legs ache under the strain
As i descend this staircase of lies.

Blood from my wound saturates my clothes
Hands fail to help.
My face worn with exhaustion,
My body tired of living.

As light disappears from around me
I try not to be scared.
Voice in my mind
Says to close my eyes
Count to five
Open my eyes
And it will all have gone away.

And I think to myself,
As i count in my head.
What happens when i get to six?
