Twenty Years

by Dannilee   Apr 17, 2007

Do you really want this for yourself?
Is there where you see yourself in twenty years?
Do your dreams involve you roaming the streets,
With no where to go and nothing to show but all your old fears?

I don't want you to end up like your dad or my dad,
Seeing this really scares me,
Picturing you like either one,
It doesn't have to be hereditary!

If only you would let yourself,
You could be so much more.
Why don't you give yourself a chance?
I know you could do it, I see it deep down within you core.

You've lived a really hard life,
And that I understand.
You may not be able to change you past,
But your future is in your hand.

Now the next time you lift it to your lips,
I hope you think about it before you take a puff.
Is this really where you want to be in twenty years?
The decision isn't really all that tough.

Now you may be thinking,
"What does she really know?"
I can answer that question quite simply,
I know nothing but the fact that I don't want to see you stoop that low!

This poem is written about a boy I know who has had a real harsh past. I spent ten days on a houseboat with this kid last summer and haven't talked to him since but I see him often wandering down town with the wrong kids and stoned out of his mind. This boy is twelve years old! I wrote this poem for him because I don't want him to end up on drugs with no life like both of our fathers did! So I just want to let you know Shaun......
I care about you! Love you kid! Please think about your future and who you want to be and who you don't!!!
