Car Crash (story)

by Curtis Ayukawa   Apr 21, 2007

I was driving home late one night. The smell of alcohol was heavy on my breath. With each passing beer the road became more of a blur. The trees on either side of me passed by faster as faster, as the needle on my speedometer rose higher and higher. I threw away another beer can, maybe my fifth or six, I didn't really remember.
The sun was setting beneath the hills as the sky began to darken. The only lights were the high beams on my car and the moon which begun to rise in the distance. I raced along going faster and faster, the sound of the struggling engine muffled by the wind whipping past my window. I felt good as I reached for another beer, my seatbelt dangling loosely at my side. But before I could take a sip of my sweet beverage I saw two blurry dots racing towards me.
In an instant the oncoming car was right in front of me. I jerked the steering wheel violently to the right, but to no prevail. The sound of the crunching metal and breaking glass rang through my ears like a sonic boom. Seconds later I was flying through the air unable to stop myself.
Some moments had passed before I awoke. A sharp pain was piercing through my side. After a while I realized I was on the ground, no longer flying though the air, but only feet from the road where the crash had taken place. The metallic taste of blood formed inside my mouth. The smell of pine trees was all around me. I tried to get up, but my legs lay limp beneath me. I lay there not knowing what to do next. By this time I felt tired and sleepy and before I knew it, the sounds around me died away and I felt the grasp of life pull away from my limp body.
