Pantoum in Yellow Jessamine

by Debbie   Apr 23, 2007

Through tremulous boughs wind lightly stirs,
Imbuing sunbeams leak into leaves.
With tropical tang as fragrant as myrrh,
Fair jasmines bloom in clusters of sheaves.

Imbuing sunbeams leak into leaves,
As the eye of heaven flutters from sleep;
Fair jasmines bloom in clusters of sheaves,
Whilst daunting chords wrought dryads to weep.

As the eye of heaven flutters from sleep,
Forbear this naught in inspiring bliss!
Whilst daunting chords wrought dryads to weep,
Fragrance sieges senses through a kiss.

Oh, how wonderful these floras can be!
With tropical tang as fragrant as myrrh,
Defacing despair like aromatic tea-
...through tremulous boughs wind lightly stirs...

The pantoum consists of a series of quatrains rhyming ABAB in which the second and fourth lines of a quatrain recur as the first and third lines in the succeeding quatrain; each quatrain introduces a new second rhyme as BCBC, CDCD. The first line of the series recurs as the last line of the closing quatrain, and third line of the poem recurs as the second line of the closing quatrain, rhyming ZAZA.
(Unable to sleep at night, I tried writing my first formal piece of Pantoum... Hope you like it.)
