An old man sits in a corner booth at the local bar,
As she lays on her back, crying under the broken stars,
And her love is shattered through her lonely eyes,
Blurred from his myriad of flawless lullabies.
But above his heart he holds the picture close,
Hating himself for leaving her for the life he chose,
And in the back of her mind, she paints a picture,
Dancing under an Amarillo sky, her life a blur,
And the whiskey takes its toll as she sighs:
'Here I sit alone and afraid, wallowing in his lies
and - I bet that other woman is the kind of pretty,
That I can only waste away to a mess and wish to be.'
And shaking her head she holds her hands to the sky,
Swearing under her breath and asking God why,
But in the middle of her rant, she hears a voice:
'My love you waste your days, but it's time to make a choice.'
And she looks to her right, as he steps in the light,
'Sorry for startlin' you but couldn't stop myself tonight,
I've spent too long watching you in despair, holding that memory,
And not once have you looked over there and noticed me,
But 'round here, we don't just cry for no damn reason Dear.'
And as he stopped, she stood staring at him fighting a crystal tear,
With her heart beating against her chest he lifted his hat and said:
'I may just be a lonely cowboy, reciting the thoughts in your head,
But if this is what it takes, I will get down on one knee,
All I ask is for once you look past your mistakes and you see,
The mistakes that made him into the man he wants to be.'
And as she held her hand out for him to take and hold,
He whispered: 'You put to shame those stars made of gold.'
And as a tear fell from her eye, she erased the picture in her mind,
For she knew the love she had was nothing to what she'd find,
With a smile on her face she turned her head up to the raven sky,
As he held her close and wiped her tears from her eyes.
