Carry On

by The DaveJon   Apr 29, 2007

A fire burning
Flames reaching high
Faced with a decision
To save the woman he loves
Swallowing pride
Casting aside self
Leaping into the flames
Screaming obscenities
The heads that turn
The torture that ends
A sacrifice to allow another
To save the one he loves
A smile on his lips
As the chains tighten and tear
Watching the one he loves
Flee up the stairway
To the light of freedom
An ax cutting a calf
Ropes burning into the flesh
Man by day
Prey by night
A prisoner for life
All worth it
For the one he loves

The idea presented here is unique Dave. One-sided love is like being tortured to see the other happy. I think everyone can relate to that. The poem itself flows very nicely and I love the word choice. It's very sad yet it's the subtle things that make the poem great. 5/5
