Obsession

by Twisted Heart   May 3, 2007

Thy memory has captured me
Upon my soul I hear it call
With tainted breath it teases me
In darkened pitch, I fall

Thy lips that gave to me a kiss
Now plead thee for return
But call thy voice a chance for this
Inside my mind it burns.

My plea I cry as night draws close
My mind now wrenched in pain
Thy heart has turned inside me cold
A torture to my soul it claims.

The bottle tips inside my breath
A solace to the heart that's torn
But though I drink, Thy sweet caress
Within a dream is born.

As darkness fails to give release
Thy touch is lost inside my grasp
To ease thee from my mind, at least
To mend my heart at last.

But bitter wine has fallen me
Thy shape now haunts forever more
No drink can slay these memories
Of my sweet Lenore.

***Challenge poem depicting Poe's love for Lenore and why it drove him to drink himself to death.***

    What a remarkable piece!

I have been in love with Poe and his poetry and I cannot deny the fact that you captured the melancholy and sorrow which the subject is suffering from through this write. I love how it progressed gracefully whilst maintaing a plaintive tone. It's a fine work, I dare say. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent job on this poem. You did Poe proud. Imagery and word choices excellent. As well as rhyme and flow.

But bitter wine has fallen me
Thy shape now haunts forever more
No drink can slay these memories
    Of my sweet Lenore.

    The ending is perfect.

My favorite of the challenge poems! Very well written...I like the Old English style very much.

The bottle tips inside my breath
A solace to the heart that's torn
But though I drink, Thy sweet caress
    Within a dream is born.

^ my favorite stanza...captures Poe to perfection I think....he would be proud!

    All the best, Debbie
