I like how much is expressed in the minimalism of this poem, the first stanza expressing the simple, carefree nature of life when there are few expectations and even fewer complications. The second stanza describes how as the ship expands for the long trip, so do the responsibilities and travails of life. I love the metaphors of canoe and ship, but I think the poem could be expanded, adding stanzas describing different stages of life, from canoe (youth) to young adult (speed boat perhaps?), to middle age (yacht?) to older age (luxury liner, Titannic>) Just thoughts, I like it as is too. |
