Ethnicity Is Not Who We Are

by Eman D   May 13, 2007

They see me and automatically think.
"Hey, look at that chink."
Forgiveness is given to the uneducated that speak.
They don't know.
They don't understand.
My ethnicity does not make me who I am.
More need to teach and more need to be taught.
So Let me educate those who are not...

Noodles, fish and rice is not all I consume.
You won't find a samurai sword hidden in my room.
I don't drive those loud street racing cars,
And please don't think that I have S.A.R.S.
No relation to Jet Li or Jackie Chan.
I can't catch a bullet w/ either of my hands.
English is my language so stop w/ the "Ching chongs".
I play various sports, not just ping-pong.
I prefer spoons and forks rather than wooden chopsticks.
I never knew how to do a jumping round house kick.
Soon I will be able to get behind the wheel.
Soy sauce is not at the table for every single meal.
My English isn't perfect but its far from broken.
Those are just a few.
Hopefully your minds are more open.
So next time, look past these slanted eyes,
And try to realize...

Between us all, will always be difference,
but that doesn't mean there has to be ignorance.
We must educate each other about our lives.
We must educate each other to break the stereotypes.
Teach everyone near or far...
Our ethnicity does not make us who we are.
