The Island

by Marianne Stokar   May 17, 2007

Open hills, wide grass
Free air, fresh air.
Through it a road
All alone, from nowhere to nowhere
Everywhere golden grass, blue sky
A small breeze, a lovely breeze

The gate is shut.
It does not belong to the road
A mixture of wood and wire
Half broken, it has no glory
Like a closed gate of an old cemetery
You are not allowed to pass

There is no welcome when you climb over
The gate cannot stop your body
But you leave your happiness behind
You are not wanted there
The gate shuts everything good out
And leaves the world behind in darkness

Your feet stand in grass, thick and green
You feel the presence of water
Only a few steps more, the grass is gone
The trees are tall with pointy needles
They take away the light
There is no vegetation on the ground

The air is thick, you cannot breath
A pressure lies on your chest
The trees keep the air imprisoned
It never moves
There is no room for you, the trees come closer
You wish you would have never come here

The track is hard to find
Old, barely used
You cross the river a couple of times
The borders are steep and slippery
The labyrinth is deceptive
It makes you lost

Only with a guide you find the way out of the trees
It is greener now, the bush takes over
You think you are freer
Some spots of flat grass
But the bush grows tall
It has its claws

The track is cramped
But it yet lets you pass
The monster is waiting
You can feel its sneer
Spider web are in your way
Branches hang over your path

A little field, a dammed up lake
The end of the track
The sun is weak through the trees
Yet the island lets you breath
But the walls around are still watching you
There is no escape

You know you cannot linger
At night the island is taken over
No one knows what will come
But there is no defence
you finally turn around
The monster is waiting

You fight your way back
Try to remember where you came from
Every branch, every leaf has thorns
They hook to your clothes and skin
It does not let you go
It sets every trap

You climb, you slip
You jump, you flee
Every direction looks the same
The track is gone
You are disorientated
The monster laughs

Back in the forest it is dark again
Dangerously quiet
Freedom is near
It captures your mind
But don't you dare to run
The monster is hidden everywhere

The final gate
From this side so innocent, so easy to climb
The sun is shining, a small breeze
Golden meadow, nothing has changed
The green island behind the gate
A forbidden place
