The Whispers In The Wind [Terzanelle]

by HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG   May 29, 2007

"The whispers in the wind are breaking me down,"
She whispers to a solemn tree with aging bark,
"The Whispers in the wind are breaking me down."

And she stands alone in a cold winter's evening park,
"Do you know how it feels to be left alone for ten years?"
She whispers to a solemn tree with aging bark.

And she traces her wrinkles, smearing from crocodile tears,
As she stands with a crumpled up old love letter in her hand -
"Do you know how it feels to be left alone for ten years?"

She repeats, etching the "I love you" on her wedding band,
And she looks to their names engraved in a dying tree,
As she stands with a crumpled up old love letter in her hand.

"I just wish there was some way to bring him back to me,"
She whispers as she traces where their lips used to meet,
And she looks to their names engraved in a dying tree.

Looking to the stars, she clutches her rustic heartbeat,
"The whispers in the wind are breaking me down,"
She whispers as she traces where their lips used to meet,
"The whispers in the wind are breaking me down."

The Terzanelle is a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the terza rima forms. It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking triplets/tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first triplet appear as refrains. The middle line of each triplet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding triplet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain.
