Mask

by Lyssi Lori   Jun 3, 2007

Excuse me, madam/sir, do you mind if I ask?
What do you think lies beneath my mask?
You look up to me because you think I'm optimistic, courageous, and great,
But behind this mask is a person you'll hate.
Under the confident smile is someone you'd never suspect,
There you'll find a child who quivers from fears you'd never expect.
Within the mask of perfection is a face that hasn't been seen in years,
Cracked and withered, slowly rusting from so many heartbreaking tears.
She tried so hard to break the mask's binding, only to fail,
The mask's grip shapes her life into a dreadful fairy tale.
She does what it says, her will is broken 'cause she'll never win,
The precious innocence you see on the outside doesn't exist within.
The mask drained the person she once was and leaves who you see now,
If only she could escape the mask, but no one knows how.
