The Life I Left Behind

by HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG   Jun 14, 2007

My foot is pressed hard against the gas,
As my hometown fades into the past,
And the mascara bleeding down my face,
Doesn't mean a thing; I've still got grace.

My fingers grip onto the steering wheel,
But I'm getting stronger; I'm tough as steel,
I've got to thank you for all of your lies,
I hope you can see the forgiveness in my eyes.

For each word that you yelled at me; every one,
Gave me the strength I needed to turn and run,
And my roots will always tangle through my veins;
No matter how long I'm lost in these four lanes.

I can see his face; laughing at me once again,
So I smash the rearview mirror and then -
Sighing; I light another cigarette, turn up the radio;
Pressing on the gas; but I don't know where this road goes.

The life I left behind won't see the likes of me,
Because out on this open road's where I need to be,
Johnny Cash is singing me a desperate lullaby;
So here's to the life I left behind and the tears I cried.
