Penny Avenue

by Ben   Jun 18, 2007

Step out onto Penny Avenue,
Green leaves line the sky,
You feel so close,
But the end is too night.
Cracks and pot holes line the path in front of me
I can't quite see you,
But I'm not yet free.

Never know where this road will end,
You slip in and out of my mind,
With every step I take,
You've always left me behind.
Falling down on Penny Avenue,
Getting too tired of waiting,
Will I ever get to you?

Rain and smoke is in the air,
Money falls from my hands,
Chocolate dollars with not much value,
They melt under your feet and disappear.
In the end they never meant anything to you,
People pass me by - going the other way,
Why am I still on Penny Avenue?

Not even a bus will pass me by,
Leaving me stranded with no way home,
People won't look me in the eye,
I'm feeling things I've never known.
All the stores are closed to me,
You're hours late but I'm still here,
Maybe I took a wrong turn - but I'm still on Penny Avenue.

You asked me to come around and watch you leave,
I stumble after you,
As I watch you drive away from me,
Dragging my feet along Penny Avenue.
And they make you cry on your birthday,
But I can't find you to hold,
You shouldn't listen to what they say.

The sun downs on Penny Avenue,
You're leaving me with no light to see,
Don't know where I'm headed,
Instincts tell me to run and flee.
In the darkness with nowhere to turn,
Left alone, again on Penny Avenue,
Left alone wishing for you.

I love the part of the chocolate dollars melting under her feet. You created a very lonely feel in this poem and it's almost haunting. I love it.

    Hey Ben,
You're such a fantastic writer. I really don't know where you get all you metaphores and put them all together so well. Beautiful work (as usual).
    Love Greta x
