I saw a child the other day
Walking with it's mother
Holding her hand and playing
With his little brother
I saw another child that day
Walking all alone
I stopped to ask where he was going
"I'm on my way back home."
The little boy took my hand
He was full of laughs
He talked about his mother
I shared my childhood past
"It sounds like you had a good life,
I wish i could say the same."
He frowned down at his rugged shoes
I felt very ashamed
"I"m sure you have a good life,
And your parents love you so."
But the pain behind the childs eyes
Was too much for me to know
"My mama really loves me
She says so everynight
But her and daddy don't say it
Sometimes i hear them fight,
Daddy seems to hate me
Though i love him very much
He jerks away everytime
I try to give him hugs
But mama lets me love her
Mama shows she cares
Sometimes she gets so aggravated
She tries to pull her hair
But after smelling some white stuff,
She seems to relax
She lays her head against me
I sometimes rub her back
But when she falls asleep
It's daddys turn to play,
I never stick around for the game
I always run away,
So now i'm on my way back home
It's getting close to night"
He said it with such confidence
I bout believe he'd be alright
What kind of person would i be
If i let him go home to that?
A daddy who drank and beat him
And a mother that did coke and crack?
"How bout you come with me?
I'll take you out to eat?
Then i have some little brothers
Who i'm sure you'd like to meet."
I took his hand and led him away
And possibly saved his life
It's people like that he lived with
That teach a kid to survive
I took him to my house that night
And told the cops the news
A social worker came by
"Please keep the child with you."
The next day his parents were arrested
The child now stays with me
He is wonderful with everyone
He's happy as can be
I have a new little brother
He drives me crazy too
But i love him just the same
And he loves me too.
