Drink The Pain Down, Graduate

by Sarah Ann   Jun 30, 2007

"I'll drink this night away,"
She said
Awake and crying hard in bed
Her cap and gown lying around
But it's too hard to block the sound

The claps and screams
And shattered dreams
All poured out in a single speech
Yet high enough she did not reach.

A fleeting beauty - Not a mask
Shines on as she walks down at last

...

Futures await; it's not too late
Erase the past, cover the hate
She smiles, proudly - oh, so grand
Diploma clutched in her right hand

Keeps out the world
Locks up her heart
So shallow it won't fall apart
What's wrong with lying cold and void?
Her 'high school' world has been destroyed.

No one seems able to make the cut
She looks along, with eyes wide shut -
"Perhaps, I'll go," she told her friends
"Where happiness will never end"
Puzzled at what her heart yearns for,
Goodbyes are said; she shuts the door.

Now cold is the bed she lies in - bare
Graduation night - It happened there...

"Drink the pain down. Dance the night.
Soon everything will be alright."
