A Tracker's Tale (Dedicated to Dad)

by Ally Smith   Jul 2, 2007

I look up towards the sky,
I watch the clouds tumbling by.
The sky darkens.
Casting shadows overhead.
The sun has been covered,
Leaving the sky like lead.

A streak of light,
A powerful sound.
A tree on the plains
Is struck to the ground.

I am taken aback by
This powerful force.
I spun around quickly
And mounted my horse.

We galloped across
These desert lands.
The storm following
Like a mysterious hand.

The clouds thickened
Heavily above.
We will return soon,
My children, My love.

Though it was hard
We rode on and on.
What a story to tell
My daughters and son.

Another shot of light,
An amazing CRACK!
Just up ahead
A branch went down flat.

Across the heavens,
Thunder bellowed.
I looked down at my horse.
My poor dear fellow.

The hot sweat from his face,
Slid down his neck.
He had mud on his hooves,
And his body was wet.

Another new sound,
The clouds had let go.
Then large, heavy droplets,
Rushed down in a flow.

On and on and on
they fell.
My hat capturing them,
Just like a well.

I could feel my horse's paces slow.
My hands too, go numb with cold.
And then I looked up,
Saw a light flickering gold.

We are home at last!
I saw the living room light.
I had better go in,
My wife would've a fright!
