I am not for all the wars going on right now so this piece was touching because it shows what everyone who's lost someone is going through. Medals and honor don't bring back the ones you loved. I enjoy the first and last stanza being the same. It made for a good beginning and good ending.
My favorite stanza is this one.
A single sheet of paper white
    A purple heart to come
This is all they sent to me
    What happened to my son?

    Great wording!

You have penned words that so many mom's must be saying at this exact moment.
I love how you began and finished with the same stanza ... except for the little change in the 3rd line .. brilliant Auntie

    Touching *wipes tear*

    Jeannie
This is such a heart breaking write. MOthers all over are seeing this everyday. So sad we are losing so many young promising lives.

With rucksack on your back, you left
    You turned to say goodbye
A wave of hand, then you were gone
As tears slipped from my eyes

The vision of this stanza just breaks my heart.
    Excellent!

    "Misty rain is falling now
    A flag is folded square
As distant guns salute your death
    My heart sinks in despair."

The young soldiers, are not soldiers, but young men fighting in the battlefields, that they shouldnt be on in the first place. Compensation for life is represented by a flag, but why would you want the flag of the country that your loved one died fighting for?
    A heartbreaking write.

I can't imagine the agony of the multitudes of grieving mothers and fathers that must bear this pain for the rest of their days. The poem is excellent in every way! Well done! All the best, Debbie
