Sweet Sweet Slumber.

by Carol   Jul 7, 2007

Under the trees in our hammock we used to sit.
Holding hands, it wasn't always about touching.
We never stayed in bed all day.
Sex was never something we thought about.
We just did it.

We were more than a couple of kids.
We were less than adults.
We just were, sitting under that waterfall we found.
Letting the water just crash on us, you shrieking.
It was so cold.

I remember most of all, how you used to touch my chest.
Feeling the beat of my heart under your palm.
I always wondered why you did it.
Maybe it was because you thought that it would stop beating if I didn't love you anymore.

I think your heart stopped one day.

That's why we put a stone marker above your head.
That's why the doctor said there was nothing he could do.
That's why our baby is in the ground beside you.

But then again, the last day I came in to see you, I touched your chest and your heart was beating.
You said you loved me.

Perhaps that's not why you touched my chest.
Maybe it was because you wanted to make sure I didn't meet your same fate.

Anyhow, now your in your eternal slumber.
And Aurthur is with you.
Maybe he's cuddling up to his Mummy right now.

I love you, Darling.
May my heart beat for you until we are reunited.
And the day we are may in death my heart beat for you also.
