Why do you wait?

by Steelfire   Jul 7, 2007

He waited for her to love him
she didn't give the clue
but after all the years went by
she finally thought it through

She found him in his hometown
living with his wife
she stood there at his doorstep
her heart, full of strife

The ringing of the doorbell
her heart pounding in her chest
she wanted to be perfect
she wanted to look her best

He opened the door and stared
and the girl who stole his heart
he was fighting back the memories
of loving from the start

"What are you doing at my door?"
The look she gave was clear
"I came to say I love you,"
she said, with a tear

He leaned against the wall
staring at the floor
how could he answer such a plea
without her asking for more

"You didn't need to wait for me,
your wishes won't come true."
the look she gave was heartless
she answered, "So, why did you?"

I didn't fully understand the last stanza. I was hoping you could explain it. But other than that, I really liked the poem. It was very well put and had good flow and rhyme without sounding forced.
