Straight Pride

by Tom Watkins   Jul 7, 2007

Straight Pride

I'm a man who enjoys women,
And up until this day,
I scarcely would have mentioned it,
For that is not my way.

What does my romantic preference,
Have to do with my peers?
Can it influence opinions,
Or overcome your fears?

The answer should be obvious,
It's a matter of pride!
Others parade it through our streets!
What have I got to hide?

I am straight, and damn proud of it!
I'll be silent no more!
It's time for me to speak my mind,
Like others have before!

I love the way a woman feels,
She's softer than a dove.
I love to hold her in my arms,
Whenever we make love!

I want the world to hear me shout!
I'm proud that I am straight!
I'm done keeping it to myself,
Though I'm risking your hate!

Parades need to be organized
In cities far and wide!
We'll march down busy boulevards
'Neath signs that read "Straight Pride!"

And even if you disagree
Or want to start a fight,
We're living in America;
That means I have the right!

You'll hear my voice in Washington,
And your state capitol!
I will lobby for the issues,
On every article.

So save your intimidation,
And all your racist threats!
I'm coming out of the closet,
I haven't vanished yet!

Keep your opinions to yourself,
If you have any sense!
You'll never silence me again,
Though you may take offense!

You pompously call us breeders,
Like shepherds would a herd.
Then you scream discrimination,
If we balk at the word.

I am through with being bullied,
My beliefs crucified;
I'll bear this sign down every street,
A sign that reads "Straight Pride!"

But are those who agree with me,
Too frightened to speak out?
Has political correctness,
Put each of them in doubt?

If so, I hope they'll be prepared,
To face the consequence.
When their opinions disappear,
Lost to intolerance!

On that day, it will be too late,
Such thoughts will be denied.
And jail will be reserved for those
Who stand up for straight pride!

You're going to have to speak up soon,
While you still have a voice.
Unless you want to lose the right
To even have a choice!

I really like the subject matter of your poetry. Some of the rhyming sounds a bit stressed though. I'd love to read some prose from you.

I loved your poem, it's really original, and so well written. Somehow funny, but also deep and truthful.

I think the first stanza is something I can relate to in my very own way. Oh, and pride is something I can relate to more than I would want to.

    Great job! 5/5

    Keep writing.

Omg I loved this poem. I'm gay but I still loved this poem because you are so right about pride. You put it perfectly into words and everything, though it made me laugh a few times, but it was great 5/5 keep it up!
