First Fight

by Steve Powers   Jul 12, 2007

Awkwardly silent unspoken words float up into thick shadows,
casting doubts and fears,
as the space between them grows.

He leans in for touch,
as comfort comes within warm caress.
He feels guilty too much,
his haunting past had caused such a testing mess.

Lost in thoughts of uncertainty she resides,
laying still and distant,
wanting in him to confide.

But yet she holds it in,
for fear of hurting him.

Reason lays fast asleep,
not waking, even as she weeps.

Broken lines are heard.
Spoken minds deterred.

Thoughts must be "this defensive" to ride the merry-go-round.
He battles for his past.
He's braced on slippery ground.

She worries for the future times.
Why can't he just leave the past behind?

They let the night swallow their minor mental battle.
Rise and shine, its left behind
they ride away on love's soft saddle.
