Ar Doh Believe In God No More

by Emma   Jul 16, 2007

"Ar doh believe in God no more,"
Said the old man in the hat.
"For wha' omnipotent deity
Would let me have a wife like that?"

"I don't believe in God no more,"
Said the Southerner with the gum.
"If God's so bleedin' merciful,
Why ain't I got no mum?"

"Wotcher," said the fat man's wife.
"I don't believe in God.
'Cause even though my life's not bad
Me sister's ain't so hot."

"I'm not sure," said I, biting my lip,
"What it is I think of Him.
Sometimes it seems religion's crazed
But atheists can be just as dim."

"I suppose," I said, with a thoughtful frown,
"I suppose God's just wishful thinking.
I suppose some people turn to God
And others turn to drinking."

"On the other hand," I mused in doubt,
"What other explanation
Can you or anyone else give
For such a world's creation?"

"Oh, I don't know," I said at last.
"What does it matter anyhow?
The lot of you can think what you like.
I've bigger problems than this right now."

Thank you very much, that means a lot to me that you liked it. I was just trying out the dialect thing, since one of my favourite poems is written in that way (A Black Country Account of the First Christmas, you could probably find it if you googled it), so I'm glad you find it effective.

I really liked this! I loved how you used the whole dialect thing.. that was a nice touch. And the rhyming was clever and witty, without being forced. Plus, you had some good ideas in there. Brilliant poem.
