The Nature of the Heart

by Mr M   Jul 21, 2007

The heart is such a tricky thing,
It gently dares perceive
The dreams and hopes and joys we sing
And sorrows which we grieve.

But is it flesh or spirit bound
Amid such circumstance
That brings us life or death profound
With such exuberance?

The heart is such a tricky thing,
It holds our passions borne
Imprisoning all the things we know
Along with Hatred's scorn.

But is it truth or specter wrought
Within existence bare
That brings our life or death to naught
Or makes our love aware?

The heart is such a tricky thing,
It strives to live unslain
Travailing long against the sting
And batters of our pain.

But is it wisdom keeping us
Or is it things unseen
That guides us to we know not what
Through days we wished serene.

The heart is such a tricky thing,
It dies then lives once more
As rolling waves that push their way
On towards a sightless shore.

THis was awesome! It reminded me of a jingle that would get stuck in my head all day! "The heart is such a tricky thing...." Loved it!

Cindy pointed out my favorite part also! That stanza brought so much color and imagination to the poem to where I could picture the ocean and feel my "tricky heart" beating..haha I love poems that make me do that! Nice work!

Great piece. The imagery and word choices are great.

The heart is such a tricky thing,
It dies then lives once more
As rolling waves that push their way
    On towards a sightless shore.

Loved these lines. It would be nice if we could see what lies ahead.
    Take care Cindy
