The Man Who Shot the Moon

by Twisted Heart   Jul 23, 2007

On edge of cliff he stood that night
With wrinkled hands he gripped the bow
Placed the arrow in its stance
Leaned back and let it go.

As sudden as the arrow's flight
Into the sky that night in June
A million stars came out to see
When Grandpa shot the moon.

A poor man in his dusty gear
But to his kin, he was the king
Made a world of faith and hope
With tender love from simple things.

We kids, around the campfire sat
Oohed and awwwed with such delight
Gave us what we wished the most
And filled the sky with sparkled lights.

A hero, He was not proclaimed
A working man from dawn to dusk
Tilled the earth, and planted seeds
But what he reaped was love.

Much older now, am I from then
Life's ever changing will consumed
But when I get too tired of this
I recall the man who shot the moon.

A legend lives for us to tend
Share with child, what we had seen
A simple man who with his bow
Gave to us a life of dreams.

Now nights will find me searching
For that arrow quiver's dusty tune
Up in the sky so full of stars
Perhaps, still now, he shoots the moon

*tear*...I have so much to say about this piece Jeannie I don't know where to start....I guess with saying...what a beautiful masterpiece you have created here! This reminded me of a poem that a teacher would read to her class or watch someone speak into a microphone and read it! It was read with a gentle oice in my head and I loved that!
Secondly, you should be very thankful you had a grandfather....All my life I wish I had one but never had the chance of meeting either of mine and I heard they would have adored me.....The only time I write about my grandpas is when I'm crying thinking of how I never got to meet them....
And Lastly, I love love love how creative you got with this.....sharing the story of your Grandpas love yet having a sort of "disney movie" twist to it...meaning it reminded me of a movie Disney would create.."The man who shot the moon"....I thought this was so excellent I have to add it to my favorites and I have no poems marked as my favorites so far!
    Loved this
