Safe for Now.

Quiet whispers echo through the streets
she's running, but trips & falls to her knees
dirt slops onto her dress, rocks scrape her skin
she must keep running though exhaustion has set in
the darkness blinds her sight
as she runs through the night
she can hear the rustling of the branches coming from behind
they are close now, she knows it in her mind
her feet are sore, but she still runs
for the chase has just begun
her dress snags on a branch & she's pulled back
they spring from the bushes & abruptly attack
she screams & cries as their claws scratch her flesh
they bite her limbs, her blood is fresh
her body pulses with pain & she knows she must escape
a survival plan begins to take shape
she grabs one of them by the neck & throws him to the ground
inside her a new strength is found
she thrusts her fist into the stomach of one
fighting & fighting until her strength is done
with a dagger from her pocket, she finishes them all
they cry out & fall
she wipes sweat off her face & shoves the dagger into a tree's bark
her life was saved for now as she runs off into the dark
