Charles, The Hammer

Charles, The Hammer
By Mark Spencer

Echoing with sounds of battle
Europe heard the clamor,
When invading Moorish armies,
Were stopped by the Hammer.

The Franks were waiting patiently
For the Moors to attack,
The invaders did not expect
The Franks to drive them back.

Nor did Abdul Rahman expect
To die that fateful day,
He thought his mighty Muslim force,
Would sweep his foes away.

But Charles Martel had other plans,
To end the Muslim threat.
And Tours would be a battle that
The Moors would long regret.

So if you think the Holy Wars,
Were just Christian tirades,
Against a kind and peaceful foe
Through unprovoked Crusades,

Then look closer at the timelines,
And the truth becomes clear.
Tours predates the holy wars by
Over three hundred years.

Since seven eleven AD
Europe was occupied,
By invading Muslim armies,
And many people died.

Both pagans and Christians were killed,
In Spain and southern France.
A fate awaiting everyone,
If the Moors had advanced.

It was the darkest of ages,
No romance, no glamour.
When a genocidal campaign
Was crushed by the Hammer.

End.
