Awake in a Dream

by Lauriel Chambers   Aug 7, 2007

All night she's been fighting
just to fall asleep
he's lying there beside her
in a dream so deep

The moonlight leaks between
the white and dusty blinds
gracing his face and casting
dark and shadowy lines

The clock reads three o' two
neon digits fill the screen
she watches the colon flash
as it turns her pillow green

Then she adjusts the blankets
and she briefly sees him smile
sleep just won't befriend her
so she'll watch him for a while

She observes how the blankets move
as his chest rises and falls
and she wonders what he's seeing
and if he dreams of her at all

And she can't help but smile
he just looks so peaceful there
lying right beside her
beneath the moonlight's glare

To capture his scent
she takes a deep breath in
nothing could feel more real
than what she'd felt just then

And all this she remembers
as the sun attacks her face
she turns to look beside her
but there's just an empty space.
